Dallas man shoots 2-year-old girl in driving aggression incident, police say

Dallas police arrested a 50-year-old man over the weekend for shooting a two-year-old girl.

According to court documents, it may have been a case of road rage in a neighborhood in far east Dallas.

It happened around 8 p.m. Sunday on Sweetwater Drive near Interstate 30 and Ferguson Road.

According to police, a family traveling for Door Dash turned onto a street where Cain was riding his motorcycle. They swerved to avoid him and honked their horns. According to police, he then turned around, pulled out a gun and shot at their car.

A two-year-old girl who was sitting in the back seat is recovering in hospital from a gunshot wound.

Two loud bangs forced Jessica Huseman to leave her home in Far East Dallas on Sunday evening.

“I went to the car, it turned around and stopped next to me,” she recalled. “And the mother, I assume, jumped out of the passenger seat and said, 'You shot my baby twice!'”

Huseman saw the little girl covered in blood in the back seat. She told the family to go to the hospital immediately while she called 911.

Soon Huseman's street was swarming with dozens of Dallas police patrol cars.

“My mother's voice just sounded…that's all I can think about,” she said. “And like the little baby…it just wasn't moving, wasn't crying, and I really thought it was dead.”

According to arrest documents, several witnesses told police they saw a motorcycle with a sidecar carrying a dog following a gray sedan around 8 p.m. They said they saw the motorcyclist pull out a handgun and fire two shots.

According to police, witnesses identified the shooter as 50-year-old Jason Cain, who lives in the neighborhood.

Before witnesses identified him, police said Cain spoke to officers when they arrived at the scene, telling them that the “drug dealers involved in the shooting were down the street.”

It is the same story that Huseman heard from Cain.

“He said, 'Oh yeah, that was me on the motorcycle. But I don't think I saw anything,'” she recalled. “And then he told me there were 'drug dealers' living on the next street, and I think he was implying that they had done it.”

Investigators interviewed the family. They said they had just delivered a DoorDash order when they saw Cain driving in the middle of the road without his lights on. They swerved to avoid him and the two honked at each other.

The family told police that Cain then followed their car through the neighborhood and yelled at them.

“I didn’t assume one of my neighbors shot a baby,” Huseman said.

Police records show that Cain initially resisted when officers arrested him at his home, but eventually gave in.

Police said they also received video evidence of the shooting.

When police searched Cain's home, they found several firearms, including automatic weapons, and many satanic and Nazi symbols.

“I hope they get the justice they need because this was horrific. This was truly horrific,” Huseman said.

Police said the two-year-old girl was in stable condition, but her condition in the hospital was unknown.

Cain is charged with assault on a child and three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. His bail has not yet been set.
