Alabama Community College System reports record enrollment

MONTGOMERY, Alabama (WSFA) – The Alabama Community College System is celebrating a major milestone, reporting its highest enrollment number for the first time in a decade.

This news brings new optimism to employers looking to fill in-demand positions in our state.

“Often, on the other side of the education is an employer waiting to offer a job,” says Neil Scott, vice chancellor for student success for the Alabama Community College System.

Scott says there are a number of factors that motivate students to pursue academic courses and professional development at community colleges.

“The price is low, but it's also very fast. And you can be sure that you're getting high-quality instruction. You're working with people who have been in the industry before and have been very successful,” Scott said.

The Alabama Community College System reported that more than 170,000 people were enrolled in Alabama's community colleges and technical colleges from August of last year to July of this year. It's the first time since 2013 that enrollment numbers reached those numbers.

“It underscores the confidence that the citizens of Alabama have in our higher education institutions and the confidence that businesses and industry have in our higher education institutions and the programs we offer,” Scott said.

Scott says this will not only benefit students, but also economic growth.

“Businesses and industry are ready and willing to hire graduates and certificate holders from Alabama community colleges,” Scott said.

The Alabama Community College System plans several initiatives to maintain enrollment momentum, including expanding online learning opportunities, collaborating with industry leaders and launching new programs in high-demand fields such as healthcare, technology and advanced manufacturing.

The Alabama Community College System consists of 24 community colleges and technical colleges in the state.
