ZDF must intervene: Shoe problem at “Giovanni Zarrella Show”

Irish singer Rea Garvey was one of the guests in the latest edition of the “Giovanni Zarrella Show” on ZDF. It was broadcast on Saturday evening (September 21, 2024). However, Garvey's appearance had already caused problems beforehand – and the broadcaster had to intervene.

ZDF has to intervene during appearance on the “Giovanni Zarrella Show”

Some of the stars appearing on the show already had their say on Friday evening on the Instagram channel. Among them was the former “The Voice of Germany” juror.

What was striking, however, was that the singer's shoe had been made unrecognizable and technically altered so that it was no longer recognizable. This was because Garvey had violated the sender's guidelines by wearing the shoes.

The logo of the US sportswear manufacturer Nike is emblazoned large and clearly on his shoes. And advertising is only permitted on ZDF under certain conditions. This applies to the TV program as well as the social media channels.

Not the first advertising glitch in “Giovanni Zarrella Show”

On its website, the broadcaster explains: “The following framework conditions are laid down by the state treaty for the advertising broadcasts by ARD and ZDF: A maximum of 20 minutes of advertising may be broadcast on working days. After 8 p.m. and on Sundays and public holidays, ARD and ZDF are generally prohibited from broadcasting advertising.”

Something similar to what happened with Garvey already happened in November 2022 around Vanessa Mai's appearance on the “Giovanni Zarrella Show”. A station spokeswoman explained that the brand was pixelated on her hoodie at the time: “Because the brand was mentioned.” Now ZDF has had to intervene with Rea Garvey as well. However, the brand can be guessed here despite his estate.

In addition to Garvey, Giovanni Zarrella will be performing alongside Italian superstar Gianna Nannini, Finnish rock star Samu Haber, American singer Ray Dalton and the ensemble of the musical “& Julia”. Unlike last time, however, the show is not live, but was “recorded in Offenburg in May for planning reasons,” as ZDF announced.
