Smith's Creek couple sentenced to 50 years in federal court for child abuse

Two men who repeatedly recorded themselves sexually abusing children were sentenced to 50 years in prison by a federal court on Wednesday.

Austin Sabb-Visga, 30, and Todd Sabb-Visga, 48, who formerly owned an equestrian center in Kimball Township, were also previously sentenced in St. Clair County District Court to a minimum term of 50 years. The sentences will be served concurrently.

In federal court, the couple pleaded guilty to three counts: two counts of sexual exploitation of children and one count of conspiracy to commit sexual exploitation of children.

“These sentences should send a strong message to these defendants and others like them who exploit our children behind closed doors and online,” U.S. Attorney Dawn Ison said in a press release after the verdict. “We will search everywhere for those who refuse to heed that message.”

The couple was arrested in June 2023 after the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children received a cyber tip from a person who said the couple had shared a video with them on social media of themselves sexually abusing a child.

Michigan State Police and the U.S. Secret Service obtained a search warrant and found over 600 videos of child pornography and approximately 300 photographs on the couple's property. At least 35 of the videos found appeared to have been produced by Austin and Todd Sabb-Visga.

According to court documents, police identified four victims based on the contents.

Federal prosecutors had asked the court to sentence the couple to 60 years in prison, citing the extreme trauma inflicted on the victims.

“The Sabb-Visgas' offenses require a punishment that reflects the widespread abuse and horrific, ongoing nature of their crimes,” said a sentencing memo filed before the verdict. “They are among the most culpable of sex offenders; a fact that outweighs any positive personal characteristics. The Sabb-Visgas participated in the heinous market of child pornography as both producers and consumers.”

In a memorandum by defense attorney Mark Satawa, who represented Austin Sabb-Visga, he asked the court to consider a 40-year prison sentence. He said Austin Sabb-Visga grew up in a violent home and suffered from various mental illnesses and substance abuse.

Letters to the court from Austin Sabb-Visga's family say Austin Sabb-Visga's behavior appeared to change in 2022, when he reportedly first began producing child pornography. Family members wrote that they later learned he also began using methamphetamine during this time, and that they believe his substance abuse influenced his actions.

“Mr. Sabb-Visga is a true first-time offender and has no prior convictions or arrests,” Satawa wrote in his memorandum.

Austin Sabb-Visga wrote an apology for the court, saying he was motivated to do so by reading the victim impact statements.

“I was ashamed of what I had done,” Austin Sabb-Visga wrote in his apology. “I have no excuses. I did what I did. I take full responsibility for myself and my actions. I would not burden anyone with this. I am sorry it happened. And I hurt people.”

There was no memorandum attached in defense of Todd Sabb-Visga.
