Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi star in Fennell's film

Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi will star in Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of Wuthering Heights, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

MRC has hired LuckyChap Entertainment to produce the film, based on author Emily Brontë's classic novel of the same name. Fennell is writing, directing and producing the project, which is currently in pre-production and preparing to begin shooting in the UK later this year.

Robbie will play Catherine Earnshaw, while Elordi will portray Heathcliff. The book was first published in 1847 and revolves around the stormy relationship between Catherine and Heathcliff, marked by passion and revenge, after they meet at the eponymous residence.

THR reported in July that Fennell was directing an adaptation of Wuthering Heights as their next feature.

Wuthering Heights is Fennell's third collaboration with LuckyChap, which Robbie runs alongside Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara. LuckyChap has also produced Fennell's previous films. Promising young woman (2020) and Saltburn (2023). Promising young woman was nominated for five Oscars and won one for Fennell's screenplay.

Elordi, known for projects such as Saltburn And euphoriawill star in the upcoming Prime Video series The narrow path to the deep north and in Guillermo del Toro's Netflix film Frankenstein.

There have been numerous film adaptations of Wuthering Heightsincluding director William Wyler's 1939 version starring Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon, which was nominated for Best Picture. More recent versions include Tom Hardy and Charlotte Riley in a 2009 miniseries for ITV, while a 2011 feature film starred Kaya Scodelario and James Howson.
