Dallas police officer injured in August shooting released from hospital

One of the Dallas police officers injured in a shooting in southeast Oak Cliff late last month was recently released from the hospital but will still need several months of outpatient treatment.

Karissa David, who was shot in the face, is blind in both eyes and will soon undergo surgery on her jaw and teeth, her family said in an update on a GoFundMe page Friday. David, 27, will also attend several appointments with specialists.

“The money that comes in will go toward renovations to her home, technology and equipment that will help her live without her sight, and transportation to the therapies and care she needs,” her family wrote. “God has been ever-present these past few weeks and we continue to give Him the glory for her life, strength, and spirit.”

Of the $25,000 goal, about $19,000 had been raised by Sunday afternoon.

On August 29, a gunman opened fire on Officer Darron Burks while he was sitting in his patrol car near the For Oak Cliff Community Center in the 900 block of East Ledbetter Drive. Sr. Cpls. David and Jamie Farmer responded and were also shot.

Officers were transported to hospitals where Burks was pronounced dead, Farmer was treated and released, and David was in critical condition.

The suspect led a police chase to Lewisville, where several Dallas police officers shot and killed him.

David's parents asked for continued prayers for them and said a portion of the money raised will also go to David and her fiancé, Josh, to help with things like making their home handicap-accessible, buying new appliances and technology to help David adjust to her loss of vision, and “to have a larger wedding next year to celebrate all that God is doing and their marriage,” the GoFundMe update said.

Police officers and volunteers also hosted a public barbecue last week to raise funds for David and Farmer, organized by the Assist the Officer Foundation.

According to records from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement, David has worked for the Dallas Police Department for five years. According to a post on X, she was honored by the Sons of the American Revolution in 2022 for saving a man who crashed into a pole in 2020.

Before becoming a police officer, David attended Evangel University, a private Christian university in Springfield, Missouri, according to Texas Commission on Law Enforcement records. A Facebook post asking for prayers after the August shooting said she played soccer there.
