Indore woman in coma after pothole accident; police charge her husband with reckless driving

Indore: A 23-year-old woman has slipped into a coma after she was critically injured when her husband's scooter, on which she was riding pillion, fell into a large pothole on a road in Indore, a police official said on Monday.

Following the accident on the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) road on the night of September 14, police have filed a complaint against the woman's husband, Shanu Gaur, for reckless driving.

After questions arose about the action taken against the woman's husband, the police said they would write to the city administration and ask which authority was responsible for maintaining the BRTS road where the accident occurred.

Shanu Gaur sustained a head injury after the scooter on which she was riding pillion fell into a large pothole in the MIG area of the city. Her husband Ravi Gaur was travelling on the two-wheeler at the time of the accident, the official said.

The seriously injured woman was taken to a hospital where she later fell into a coma, he said.

Ravi Gaur was subsequently booked under sections 125 (endangering life or personal safety of others) and 281 (reckless driving) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, he said.

Madhya Pradesh Congress spokesperson Neelabh Shukla termed the filing of the case against the injured woman's husband as an “unjustified move” by the police and demanded departmental action against the police officers who committed this alleged mistake.

When asked about the reckless driving case, Deputy Commissioner of Police Abhinay Vishwakarma said, “We will write to the civic body and ask which authority is responsible for the maintenance of the BRTS road. After their reply, we will take appropriate action.”
