Man dies in bizarre accident with frozen hamburger: “Hard to accept”

LONDON, September 23: British officials recently revealed the tragic circumstances surrounding the death of 57-year-old Barry Griffiths, a resident of Llandrindod Wells. According to a report in the Western Telegraph, Griffiths died in June 2023 after accidentally stabbing himself while trying to cut up frozen burgers.

The findings were announced during a court hearing on Monday, where coroner Patricia Morgan described the circumstances that led to Griffiths' death. He had been using a knife to cut up the frozen burgers when he accidentally stabbed himself in the stomach. Morgan noted that Griffiths had limited movement in one arm due to a previous stroke, which likely contributed to the accident.

Tragically, Griffiths' body remained in his apartment for several days after his death. Morgan explained that he had led a relatively private life with limited social contact, which delayed a police health check. His body was discovered in his bed on July 4, 2023. His phone was reportedly last active on June 23 and his laptop was used on June 24.

In addition to the knife attacks, Griffiths suffered from atherosclerosis, a condition in which arteries become clogged with plaque and restrict blood flow to the heart, further complicating his health.

Initially, authorities feared his death might be a suicide or murder. However, Assistant Chief Inspector Jonathan Rees later confirmed that the cause of death was an accident involving Griffiths alone. He explained that the bottom drawer of the freezer had been left open and pulled forward, suggesting that Griffiths had been trying to get to food.

Rees described the scene of the accident in detail, saying: “On the kitchen worktop next to the fridge freezer were two raw burgers, a knife and a kitchen towel.” He suspected that Griffiths was trying to take the frozen burgers apart when the accident happened.

During the hearing, Coroner Morgan addressed Griffith's family, acknowledging that the evidence presented had been traumatic. She expressed her condolences and thanked the family for their patience throughout the inquest.
