Authorities in Alabama were searching Monday for multiple gunmen who opened fire in Birmingham's entertainment district over the weekend, killing four people and injuring 17 in what police described as a “riot.”

The gunmen opened fire around 11 p.m. on Saturday in the Five Points South neighborhood, a busy area of shops, bars and restaurants a few blocks from the campus of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Police Chief Scott Thurmond said at a news conference.

Three people were pronounced dead at the scene and another person died a short time later at a local hospital. The victims were identified as Anitra Holloman, 21, Tahj Booker, 27, Carlos McCain, 27, and Roderick Lynn Patterson Jr., 26, according to Birmingham police.

A total of 17 people were injured, four of them with life-threatening injuries, ministry spokesman Truman Fitzgerald said in an email.

Thurmond told reporters that the shooters targeted one person — who was one of the victims — and that the others were caught in the hail of bullets. More than 100 shell casings were found at the scene, Thurmond said.

“We believe this was an attack on this particular person,” he said.

The police have not yet been able to identify a motive for the shooting. The number of shooters is also still unclear.

In a press conference, Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin said the shooters may have modified their weapons with Glock switches, devices that can convert semi-automatic handguns into automatic weapons.

“Unfortunately, this is not the first time in 2024 that we have seen such weapons and so many bullets on our streets, as are typical of the use of automatic weapons,” Woodfin said.

Alabama state lawmakers pushed to enact a state ban on these devices, but that effort failed in the last legislative session.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are assisting local police in the investigation. Authorities urged witnesses to come forward and offered a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest, authorities said.

The incident is the latest shooting to rock Birmingham this year. In July, four people died in a shooting at a nightclub. That same month, three people were killed in a shooting, including a five-year-old child.

“This senseless violence is unacceptable and must stop,” said Rep. Terri Sewell (D-Selma) of Alabama in a statement about Saturday's shooting. “We as elected officials at every level of government must do everything in our power to break the cycle of violence, get dangerous weapons off our streets and make our communities safer.”
