“She didn't move anymore”: During a performance by Circus Krone in Burghausen, aerial acrobat Amalia Avanesian (29) fell from a height of six meters. Spectator Martina H. was an eyewitness to the drama. How she describes the accident and how the victim is doing.

Burghausen A seemingly weightless dance at dizzying heights turned into a fight for life and death. In front of the audience, aerial acrobat Amalia Avanesian (29) fell six meters into the depths on Saturday evening (21 September) during a performance with her partner Yevhen Abakumov (48) at the Circus Krone in Burghausen (Altötting district).

The drama occurred at around quarter to six, when the duo (“Flash of Splash”) performed their breathtaking number in front of around 3,000 spectators. Amalia and Yevhen glittered through the air on straps, so-called straps, which were attached to the ceiling, rotating like tops, somehow hanging on to each other, sometimes by the arm, sometimes by the leg, sometimes by the teeth, using only the strength of their dentures.

Spectator Martina H. (48) was also spellbound. Then came the moment when the woman climbed to the top and let herself fall down, the eyewitness reports. “She wanted to grab his hands, but couldn't get a proper grip on them.” Perhaps he wasn't able to grab her properly either. In any case, she crashed to the ground from a height of five or six meters. There was no protection, nothing. Our hearts were broken. And she just stayed there and didn't move. “We thought the worst had happened,” says Martina H.

Acrobat was flown to hospital in Traunstein

According to H., the circus reacted promptly. “They immediately set up a screen from the outside.” Doctors from the audience came, and at some point, thank God, the emergency doctor, the fire department and the police arrived. Then a helicopter arrived and after half an hour they took the woman away.”

Burghausen police confirmed the fall. The artist was taken to Traunstein hospital. “Some of her injuries are life-threatening, but she is not expected to die,” said a spokesman. The police are investigating the circumstances of the accident.

After the acrobat was removed, the performance continued

The circus is in shock. “The entire Circus Krone team is hoping and praying for Amalia's quick and full recovery,” said director Martin Lacey on Sunday. The Russian has been working with the Ukrainian since 2015, and they have been with Circus Krone since 2019. Both are absolute top artists. But despite all the safety precautions that are in place, says Lacey, danger is always present: “This is the life we have,” said the tamer, who carried out his big cat training as planned after the accident. After the performance, “the whole circus family” came together in the ring. “We prayed together.”

The last performance was in Burghausen on Sunday. The opening performance is in Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz on Thursday (26 September). The last stop before the end of the season is Nuremberg (29 October to 10 November).
