Edo decides: Aisha Yesuf criticizes Governor Obaseki for crying over election results

Sociopolitical activist Aisha Yesuf has criticised Governor Godwin Obaseki for his outcry over the outcome of the Edo State gubernatorial election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday, Monday, declared Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the election held on Saturday, September 21, 2024.

Okpebholo of the APC won eleven local government areas, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Asue Ighodalo won seven, while Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP) did not win a single constituency.

INEC’s Chief Electoral Officer, Prof. Faruk Adamu Kuta, Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, officially declared Okpebholo the winner of the election.

According to INEC, Okpebholo received 291,667 votes, beating Ighodalo and Akpata with 247,274 and 18,737 votes respectively.

DAILY POST had reported that Obaseki entered the INEC assembly centre unannounced at about 2am on Sunday and was escorted out at about 4.10am.

Obaseki had stated that the purpose of his visit was to obtain first-hand information.

A joint team of police officers led by DIG Frank Mbah and members of the Nigerian Army entered the premises and escorted Obaseki from the premises.

“I am looking for a video of Obaseki speaking on the principles of democracy. Please share if you have it,” Ms Yesufu wrote on X.

“Obaseki refused to swear in 14 members of the Edo State House of Assembly for four years.

“Obaseki refused to swear in judges. He swore in 5 out of 8 judges.

“Obaseki has ensured that his deputy governor is removed from office. He speaks of a democracy under attack,” she wrote.

DAILY POST reported that President Bola Tinubu has since congratulated the elected governor and his party on their victory.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari also congratulated the APC governor-designate.
