4 dead, over a dozen injured after shooting in Birmingham, Alabama's entertainment district

Four people were killed and 18 others injured in a shooting in a popular nightlife district of Birmingham, Alabama, on Saturday.

According to Birmingham police, many of the victims were caught in the crossfire after gunfire erupted in the Five Points South entertainment district shortly after 11 p.m.

Officers found two men and a woman with gunshot wounds on a sidewalk and pronounced them dead at the scene. Another man was pronounced dead at a local hospital, police said.

The 18 other victims of the shooting suffered serious to life-threatening injuries, officials said.

The identities of the victims have not been made public.

Investigators believe the shooting was not random and that the suspect(s) drove to the scene, got out of a vehicle, fired into the crowd, then got back in the car and fled.

“It's difficult,” Police Chief Scott Thurmond said Sunday morning. “Our condolences go out to the community.”
