R40 reopened after fatal accident; four dead, including a child, in collision between truck and SUV

The R40 between Mbombela and Barberton has finally reopened after a horrific accident on Friday 21 September 2024.

Four people were killed in the accident when a truck and an SUV collided on the stretch of road.

The cleanup work took 10 hours

Due to the accident that occurred on Saturday evening, the road section had to be closed.

Officers spent about ten hours cleaning up the scene of the accident before reopening the road.

In the early hours of Saturday, September 22, the street was finally cleared.

Passengers burned beyond recognition

Four people, including a child, were killed in the tragic accident. All four victims, who were in the SUV, suffered burns beyond recognition.

The truck driver was injured and the cause of the accident is still being investigated.

R40 designated as dangerous

Social media was flooded with people expressing their condolences to the families of the victims, and some also commented on the stretch of road in question.

“Since 2022 to July 2024, I have been driving on this road from Monday to Friday. I immediately get a stomach ache when I reach the curves of this road. Most drivers drive recklessly and at high speed. Unfortunately, speeding leads to accidents on this road and unfortunately most people lose their lives time and time again.”💔😢

Three dead in Mbombela accident

In August, another tragic accident occurred in the Mbombela area, killing three people.

Short messages reported that a learner driver was among the victims killed in the three-vehicle accident.

More than 20 driving students were injured in the accident, when a minibus collided with a truck and a van.
