Tragic shooting in Birmingham's nightlife district leaves four dead

Four people died and more than 20 were injured in a shooting in a nightlife district in Birmingham, Alabama, according to police and news reports.

In a social media post on Saturday, Birmingham police said several people were shot on 20th Street near Magnolia Avenue in the Five Points South neighborhood.

Birmingham police officer Truman Fitzgerald said the shooting, which left up to 21 people injured, occurred shortly after 11 p.m. in the 2000 block of Magnolia Avenue South, AL.COM reported.

Fitzgerald said there were “dozens of gunshot victims” and at least four suffered “life-threatening” injuries, AL.COM reported.

Birmingham Fire and EMS pronounced the three victims dead at the scene, and a fourth person was pronounced dead at the University of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham, AL.COM reported.

Among the victims found dead at the scene were two men and a woman, WBMA-TV reported, police said.

Other victims were taken to hospitals in private vehicles, police told WBMA.

Birmingham police did not immediately respond to an email from The Associated Press seeking further information.

Birmingham's Five Points South neighborhood is home to numerous entertainment venues, restaurants and bars and is often crowded on Saturday nights.

Police said no immediate arrests had been made.

“We will do everything in our power to track down, identify and hunt down the person responsible for the attacks on our people this morning,” Fitzgerald told WBMA.
