War between Russia and Ukraine: 12 injured after Russian attack on apartment in Kharkiv, Ukraine

Russian forces attacked a multi-story apartment building in Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, on Saturday evening. At least 12 people were injured and some of the residents had to be evacuated, said Mayor Ihor Terekhov.

Kharkiv, 30 kilometers from the Russian border, has been a frequent target of attacks from Moscow since Kremlin troops began invading its smaller neighbor in February 2022.

Terekhov wrote on the messaging app Telegram that the Russians had used a guided bomb and rescue operations were underway at the site. He said many windows were broken and 60 residents had been evacuated from the building.

Public broadcaster Suspilne reported that the bomb landed in a tree in front of one of the building entrances and that several cars exploded or were set on fire.

The region's governor, Oleh Syniehubov, said a child was among the injured. He said there had been two attacks on the city and an attack near the town of Izium, southeast of Kharkiv, in which two private houses were set on fire.

On Friday, Russian forces carried out three attacks on Kharkiv, injuring 15 people.

Further south, two people were killed in a Russian drone attack in the town of Nikopol on Saturday, the regional governor said.

In Kurakhove, one of the focal points of the slow Russian advance through the Donetsk region, one person was killed in a Russian artillery attack, regional prosecutors said.

Local authorities in the Sumy region said Russian aircraft had hit energy infrastructure in the town of Shostka.

Sumy has also been a frequent target of Russian attacks and lies opposite Russia's southern Kursk region, where Ukrainian forces launched an incursion last month.
