Deputy charged after fatally shooting girlfriend while cleaning rifle, police say

OCALA, Fla. (WCJB/Gray News) – A Florida police officer has been charged with manslaughter after police say he shot and killed his 25-year-old girlfriend. The now-fired officer claims the shooting was an accident.

Officials with the Ocala Police Department said officers were called to a home in the Highlands area around 11 p.m. Thursday after receiving a call from Marion County Sheriff's Deputy Leslie Dale Boileau, WCJB reports.

Boileau told emergency dispatchers he accidentally shot his girlfriend, 25-year-old Polina Wright. Officers found the victim dead with a gunshot wound to the forehead.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim's family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” said Police Chief Mike Balken. “The Ocala Police Department is working with the District Attorney's Office to ensure justice is served.”

Boileau allegedly admitted that the couple drank margaritas at the Mexican restaurant Los Magueyes before going home to clean their firearms – a pistol and a rifle.

He told officers that he and Wright were cleaning the guns and “dry firing” them. While allegedly demonstrating the use of a rifle, the suspect said he “accidentally” fired the loaded gun, striking and killing his girlfriend.

According to the arrest report, Boileau told police officers when they arrived, “I know this looks really bad.” He also allegedly said he knew it was wrong to point the gun at Wright because he himself was a police officer.

Officials said evidence found at the scene confirmed the suspect's account of events.

Boileau was arrested and charged with manslaughter and was fired from his position with the sheriff's office, where he had served for eight years and received decorations.

“We are heartbroken for the victim's family and friends. Tens of thousands of law enforcement officers do a commendable job every day. But unfortunately, the tragic actions of a single officer are felt throughout the police community,” said Sheriff Billy Woods. “The Ocala Police Department has the support of my office as they complete their investigation into this tragic incident.”

Marion County residents told WCJB that the investigation would need to consider all factors, including firearms training and alcohol use, as well as Boileau's reputation as a law enforcement officer.

“If he has previously received awards for his outstanding service and dedication to the community, all of that must be taken into consideration before making a decision that will impact someone's life and family for the rest of their lives,” Christian Gonzalez said.

Under Florida law, mug shots of police officers are exempt from inclusion in public records.
