J&K DGP lauds locals for rescue effort in BSF bus accident in Budgam, announces rewards, SPO recruitment drive

Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP) RR Swain today visited Brell village in Central Kashmir's Budgam district and lauded the efforts of locals in rescuing injured persons following a tragic accident involving a Border Security Force (BSF) bus. The accident occurred when the bus skidded off the road and fell into a ravine, resulting in the death of three BSF personnel and injuries to 36 others.

DGP Swain praised the quick action of the villagers and announced a cash reward and certificates of recognition for those involved in the rescue efforts. He also announced plans to conduct a recruitment drive for Special Police Officers (SPO) in the village.

“The way the residents of Brell village rescued the injured is commendable. I heard that women also helped the injured,” DGP Swain told reporters at the accident site.

Swain narrated the personal account of a local driver: “I met a sumo driver who said that a BSF man died in his arms when he tried to rescue him. This too was done without any material motive. The rescue by locals was quite natural.”

He also assured the public that all injured people were being treated and no one was in critical condition.

Regarding the ongoing election preparations in the region, DGP Swain spoke about the security measures taken: “The security of the candidates during the election campaign is being ensured. Also, the area where the election is taking place is being secured. Police and other security forces are working on a plan to protect the polling areas.”

Swain stressed that the ultimate goal is to create a safe and fear-free environment for voters. He also acknowledged that in the past, certain individuals have discouraged residents from assisting with security forces in such accidents. However, he noted that police efforts have helped change this dynamic, allowing residents to act freely and without fear in such situations.

“Here the police have worked to create an atmosphere in which everyone lives without fear and freely in the open air,” noted the DGP.
