According to police, the victim of the house fire in Māngere was a small child

The death of one person was confirmed and four occupants were examined by emergency services on site.

A spokeswoman for Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) said the fire service received several emergency calls alerting them to the fire at 1.23pm yesterday.

Video footage taken on a neighboring property and posted on social media shows thick white smoke rising from the front of a house.

Members of a local church group gathered at the barrier.

Hato Hone St John said four patients with milder conditions were examined at the scene and did not require treatment.

Fenz's spokeswoman said: “The house was about 15 by 10 meters and was already fully ablaze when we arrived.”

Four fire engines were on site and were able to extinguish the fire, she said.

“We have fire investigators on site to determine the cause of the fire. Police and ambulances are on site.”
