A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a man in Bristol, police said.

Avon and Somerset Police arrested a 32-year-old man in the Eastville area of the city at around 5.45pm on Saturday. He remains in custody.

The arrest follows the death of a 25-year-old man who was stabbed to death on Stapleton Road at around 5.40pm on Friday.

The local police began first aid and called for reinforcements.

The man was given emergency treatment by paramedics on the scene and then taken to Southmead Hospital. However, he was pronounced dead later that evening.

A murder investigation has been launched and extensive searches were carried out in Bristol on Friday evening with the assistance of the National Police Air Service.

Police have also arrested two women, aged 36 and 47, on suspicion of aiding and abetting a crime. Both remain in custody.

A man arrested on Friday on suspicion of the same offence was released without further action.

Detective Inspector Mark Newbury, lead investigator, said: “The arrest of a man this afternoon on suspicion of murder marks a significant step forward in our investigation.

“He is in custody and will be questioned in due course by detectives from our Serious Crime Investigation Team.

“We are in contact with close friends of the deceased man, have informed them of the news this evening and continue to offer them our support.

“Stapleton Road has been reopened this afternoon following the completion of our on-site investigations and we are grateful for the public’s understanding whilst the necessary works are carried out.

“The public can continue to expect an increased police presence over the next few days as we seek to assist anyone who is concerned following this tragic incident.”

Bristol's commander, Superintendent Mark Runacres, said on Saturday: “There is no place for violence on the streets of Bristol and we are committed to working with partners on this issue.”

“We want the community to understand that we are here to help them.

“We understand that such tragic news is deeply disturbing, which is why we will be increasing police presence in the area and conducting more patrols over the coming days. Not because we are aware of any increased risk, but because we want to ensure that you can contact us with any concerns.

“Stapleton Road is very busy even at the best of times, especially on an early Friday evening.

“We are grateful to the people who have already spoken to police and told us what they saw and we ask anyone else who has information to contact us as soon as possible.”

Mr Runacres said he was aware of filming taking place in the area and they would like to hear from anyone who has footage relevant to their investigation.

However, he asked that out of respect for the man's friends and family, no insensitive images be posted on social media.
