Bodycam connection issues reported in police shootings in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police are currently investigating two separate officer-involved shootings.

At the scene of the first shooting near Babcock Road, Police Chief Bill McManus addressed problems with the department's body camera system that had been reported earlier in the day.

“From what I understand, the body camera system was down for a while…at some point during the day,” McManus explained.

According to a statement from the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD), all body-worn cameras were functional and recording.

“The issue was related to the internet connection to the Axon platform, which caused some uploads to be delayed. The City of San Antonio IT department worked diligently to resolve the issue and all issues have now been resolved,” the statement said.

The department has reached out to Axon, the manufacturer of the body cameras, for more information on the connectivity issues but has not yet received a response.

In the Cantrell Avenue shooting, police were pursuing a suspect who was wanted for several recent robberies.

“He was wanted on a warrant for aggravated robbery for the first robbery he had just committed… He fled, ran out of the block behind me, got out of the car and ran. At one point he ran into a fence – he had a gun in his hand,” McManus explained.”

The suspect was eventually shot after allegedly pointing a gun at officers. The body camera footage will be crucial evidence in the ongoing investigation.

Currently, all information released is preliminary and the investigation is ongoing.

The officers involved in the shooting were assigned administrative duties.
