RCMP: Death of Nanaimo man ruled a homicide

A man found dead behind a curling rink in Nanaimo, BC, earlier this month was the victim of a homicide, police confirmed.

In an update on the case Saturday, Nanaimo RCMP also identified the man as 42-year-old Lee Harland and released photos of him.

Murder victim Lee Harland can be seen in a surveillance image taken “several days before his death,” according to Nanaimo RCMP. According to Mounties, Harland's body was found on September 12 in a wooded area next to railroad tracks near Kennedy Street and Comox Road.

According to police, Harland had no permanent address, “lived an unsettled life and frequently visited homeless camps throughout Nanaimo.”

To assist in their murder investigation, police are asking anyone who may have had recent contact with Harland to call the dispatch center and request dashboard camera video from the area between September 9 and 12.

The Nanaimo RCMP can be reached at 250-754-2345.
