Driver released after fatal hit-and-run accident in downtown Phoenix

PHOENIX – A man is dead and a driver is at large after a hit-and-run crash early Saturday morning in central Phoenix.

Phoenix police said they were called to an accident with injuries in the area near 16th Street and Camelback Road around 12:30 a.m.

When officers arrived, they found two cars involved and a man with serious injuries.

The man, identified as 29-year-old Dillon Mares, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The other driver, who was allegedly at fault, fled the scene of the accident before police arrived.

Police believe the fleeing driver was traveling south on 16th Street when he ran a red light at Camelback Road and collided with the car driven by Mares.

The crash remains under investigation.

Police are asking anyone with information about this accident to call Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS or 480-TESTIGO (Spanish).
