Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar promises action against negligent police officers and criminal gangs

Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday said his government would not compromise on law and order and warned that “strict action will be taken against police officials for negligence”. Speaking at a review meeting of the Home Ministry, the chief minister stressed that the rule of law was the “top priority” for the NDA government.

The meeting is of great importance in the backdrop of the opposition's attacks on the government over alleged deterioration of law and order in the state.

According to a statement from the Chief Minister's Office, Kumar said, “The government will not compromise on law and order and will take strict action against negligent police officers.” He directed police officials to increase night patrols and asked senior officials to conduct regular inspections in their areas.

Highlighting a decline in crime related to land disputes, Kumar said, “Earlier, over 60 per cent of crimes were due to land disputes. Now, this has come down to 46.69 per cent. The government has initiated a special aerial photography and land settlement drive across the state, which needs to be completed immediately to defuse land disputes.” The chief minister also ordered action against organised criminal gangs and stressed the need for necessary measures in this regard.

To further improve law and order, Kumar announced the creation of 229,139 new posts in various categories in the state police force.

He mentioned that there are currently about 106,436 police officers in service and efforts are being made to fill the remaining vacancies.

“There are around 30,000 women employed in the police force in Bihar, more than in any other state in India. We have ensured 35 percent women representation in the police and other government services,” the chief minister said.

Later, the CM chaired a review meeting of the tourism department where he directed the officials to complete the development work of Punaura Dham Janki Mandir, a Hindu pilgrimage site in Sitamarhi district, considered the birthplace of Sita.

According to official sources, the state cabinet has already approved Rs 7,247 million for the development of the site.
