According to Yahoo Sports, the Australian was taken to a local hospital and later flown by helicopter to an ophthalmologist in Canberra.

A New South Wales Ambulance Service spokesman told the Sydney Morning Herald: “Just before 2pm we responded to reports that a man in his 20s had been struck in the head by a golf ball.

“We treated the man for a head injury and he was taken to Moruya District Hospital.”

Guan's coach Paul Davis announced that the golf star had suffered multiple orbital fractures following an erroneous tee shot by an amateur pro-am participant.

Davis also confirmed that there was concern that his player could lose “some vision,” but stressed that nothing was certain yet.

Guan's coach told Australian Golf Digest: “Obviously there are concerns that he may lose some of his vision, but we won't know the exact extent until he goes to Sydney for further tests.”

“It's really awful. This was actually the first pro-am tournament Jeff ever played in.

“This is just the worst news after such an incredible week in California.”

Guan had just returned to Australia after making his PGA Tour debut at the Procore Championship in Napa, California.

The young golfer turned professional last fall and already has seven top-25 finishes, including the Australian PGA and the Australian Open last year.

Guan is currently ranked 989th in the official world golf rankings.
