To reduce the number of road deaths in India, a committee is to investigate the causes | News from Lucknow

Lucknow: To reduce the number of road deaths in the state by 50%, the government is emphasizing the role of District-level committees was set up to check the number and causes of traffic fatalities in each district.
At a recent meeting of the Road Safety Committee, ACS L Venkateshwarlu directed the district-level committees to prepare and implement an action plan and also to meet every month to review the new standard operating procedures, he said.
Clarification was sought from departmental committees, which do not meet regularly to review road fatality data.
Uttar Pradesh has an average of 22,000 road deaths every year, the highest number in the country, though the state does not report the highest number of road accidents. However, in 2023, the number of road deaths rose to 23,652. A committee on road safety headed by CM Yogi Adityanath regularly reviews the road accidents in Uttar Pradesh.
Overspeeding is the leading cause of road deaths in Uttar Pradesh. Most of the fatalities are in the 18-25 age group, followed by the 25-35 age group.
Topping the list are Kanpur (with an average of 618 deaths per year), Agra (560), Prayagraj (550), Bulandshahr (525), Aligarh (513), Mathura (512), Lucknow (482), Unnao (480), Hardoi (461) and Bareilly (440).
