1 dead in ammonia gas leak at factory in Punjab, several complain of suffocation

Chandigarh:

One person died on Saturday when ammonia gas leaked from an ice factory near Domoria Bridge in Punjab's Jalandhar district, officials said.

Several people complained of suffocation as a result of the leak, it said. Police cordoned off the area and diverted traffic.

Fire engines and an ambulance were called to the scene and six people were rescued from the factory. One of them, who was brought out unconscious, died, while the rest are in stable condition.

The incident occurred around 2 p.m. Residents in the area complained of a strong smell and the risk of suffocation.

The Deputy District Commissioner of Jalandhar ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident and directed the Sub-District Magistrate to submit a report on the incident within 15 days.
