MINNEAPOLIS – In one of the most notable prime-time games on Saturday night, two storied Big Ten schools meet on the football field: The Minnesota Golden Gophers host the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Both teams have had notable victories against weaker opponents this season, but have struggled in serious encounters.

Minnesota started the year with a tough 19-17 home loss to North Carolina in Week 1. They responded with back-to-back shutouts against Rhode Island and Nevada, scoring 75 points in the process. The big question, though, is whether PJ Fleck's team can hold its own against a solid opponent, especially one with a historically respected defense in Iowa. Minnesota plays at home, where they have won three of their last four games.

Iowa is trying to figure out what they are. Despite entering the 2024 season as a top 25 player, they have shown why many doubt them. A disappointing 20-19 home loss to Iowa State in Week 2 highlighted the Hawkeyes' persistent offensive issues over the years. While they scored 38 points against Troy last Saturday, they surprisingly gave up 21 points. If Iowa wants any chance of competing with the best in the revamped Big Ten, they need to fix the problems on both sides of the ball.

Saturday night marks the 98th meeting between the Hawkeyes and the Gophers. Minnesota is 63-52-2 against Iowa, ending an eight-game losing streak to the Hawkeyes from last season.
