Funeral of Irishman found dead in police cell in Portugal takes place – Homepage

The funeral of the Irishman who was found dead under tragic circumstances in a police cell in Portugal is scheduled to take place on Monday.

Ryan Chan, from Letterkenny, County Donegal, was found dead in his cell on September 11 after being arrested the night before in the Albufeira region of Portugal.

The 29-year-old restaurant worker is believed to have been detained in connection with an alleged attack on his partner as the couple travelled to the country for a wedding.

The victim of the knife attack, a woman in her twenties, was treated for her injuries in hospital and subsequently released.

The Portuguese military police, the National Republican Guard, said the circumstances of Mr Chan's death were under investigation.

His remains have now been repatriated to Ireland by the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust ahead of his funeral on Monday morning.

The obituary for Mr Chan said he will be sadly missed by his loving partner Megan and their children Ezra and Eli, his mother Frances, his father Bobby and his wife Yvonne, his brother Connor, his grandmothers, aunts, uncles, cousins ​​and a large circle of family, friends and neighbours.

Mr Chan's remains will lie in state at his mother Frances's home at 4 Kiltoy Court, Letterkenny F92 C8DP on Saturday 21 September from 4pm to 10pm and on Sunday 22 September from 12pm to 10pm. The Rosary will be recited at 9pm on both evenings.

His funeral will take place on Monday 23 September at 10.15am, with a visit to the Church of the Irish Martyrs in Ballyraine, Letterkenny at 11am, followed by burial in Conwal Cemetery.
