Police investigate perpetrator’s motive

Rotterdam- Following the fatal knife attack in Rotterdam, police are still investigating the motives of the suspected perpetrator.

According to police, the man attacked passers-by with a knife in the Dutch port city on Thursday evening.

One person was killed and another seriously injured. The suspected perpetrator was arrested.

According to police, the man is a 22-year-old from Amersfoort, which is about 80 kilometers east of Rotterdam. He had previously been in the police's attention. However, no further details were given. The fatality was a 32-year-old man. A 33-year-old from Switzerland was seriously injured.

Witnesses reportedly told police that the man shouted “Allahu Akbar” (God is great) and attacked people indiscriminately. Some Islamic extremists use the phrase as a battle cry.

In doing so, they are essentially hijacking the central religious formula of Islam, which has been used by Muslims around the world for centuries.

The incident occurred late in the evening near the Erasmus Bridge in the city center. According to witnesses, a 32-year-old fitness trainer overpowered and disarmed the man, media reported.

He told TV station NOS that the attacker had two long knives with him.
