Student injured in off-campus stabbing near Santa Maria High School | Local news

A student was injured in a stabbing near Santa Maria High School on Friday afternoon.

Santa Maria police and firefighters were called to campus at 1:38 p.m. on a report that someone had been stabbed outside of campus, police Sergeant Nate Totorica said.

A teenager who suffered upper body injuries in a stabbing that reportedly occurred nearby ended up in the school nurse's office.

“Santa Maria High School assisted an injured student who returned to campus shortly after school ended today to seek medical attention following an altercation off campus in a nearby neighborhood,” said Kenny Klein, spokesman for the Santa Maria Joint Union High School District.

“This is an active police investigation and we cannot release any further details. Our thoughts and prayers are with the student, his family and friends.”

The school community was informed of the incident.

Counseling services will be available upon request starting Monday, Klein added.

The teenager is in stable condition at Marian Regional Medical Center, Totorica added.

Detectives arrived at the scene late Friday afternoon to begin investigating the incident and identify a suspect.

Further information was not immediately available as the incident was still under investigation.
