17-year-old charged with stabbing in Surrey that left two people injured

A teenager has been charged with several offences in connection with the stabbings that took place in the Newton area of Surrey last week.

The 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named because he is a minor, was arrested on Sept. 13 and charged with two counts of assault with a weapon and two counts of assault, Surrey's Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said in an update on the case Thursday.

The teenager will remain in custody pending a court appearance, police said. A second suspect – an adult man – was released without charge.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred on September 11. At around 4:30 p.m. that day, police received a report of a fight on 130th Street near 60th Avenue.

When officers arrived, they found two men who had been stabbed. Both were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

At the time, police said the stabbing occurred when “the victims met with the suspects to conduct a transaction.” They said these circumstances led them to believe the attacks were targeted.

The suspects fled the scene in a vehicle when officers arrived, Mounties said. In their initial statement, police said they were looking for three black men in their late teens or early 20s.

The Surrey Royal Canadian Mounted Police Robbery Unit “quickly identified the suspects,” police said in their update Thursday.
