China faces calls for transparency after recent knife attack that sparked security concerns

A series of recent knife attacks on foreigners in China could fuel concerns about the personal safety of foreigners living in the country, diplomatic observers say, adding that greater transparency from the authorities is crucial to allaying fears and restoring confidence in the country.

The latest act of violence – in which a 10-year-old Japanese boy died on Thursday morning – after he was stabbed in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen – has renewed calls for Beijing to be more transparent in its response to such incidents.
The local authorities had stated the attacker was a man with a criminal record, but no motive was given. Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning did not comment on a motive on Friday, citing ongoing investigations.

In a phone call on Thursday, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong told Japanese Ambassador to China Kenji Kanasugi that the murder was an “isolated case committed by a person with a criminal record,” according to the Japanese embassy.

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Lin Jian also described the incident as an “isolated case” and stressed that such attacks could happen anywhere in the world.
