Doctor at Hedgewar Govt Hospital in Delhi ‘attacked’ by patient’s relatives

A doctor was allegedly verbally and physically attacked by relatives of a patient at the Delhi government-run Hedgewar Hospital on Friday.

The incident is said to have occurred in the morning at the hospital in Karkardooma.

The “attacked” doctor could not be reached because her mobile phone was switched off. One of her colleagues said she was traumatized by the incident.

A junior doctor told PTI that a 70-year-old man was admitted to the hospital in a critical condition, suffering from hypertension, paralysis of one side of his body, difficulty breathing and chest pain for the past three days.

The patient was cared for by the doctor, who immediately suggested an ECG for further clarification.

However, the patient allegedly did not cooperate during the procedure and insisted on seeing a heart specialist, which led to his referral to Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital, the junior doctor said.

He added that due to the man's critical condition, an ambulance was dispatched along with a member of hospital staff to take the patient to GTB Hospital.

“Unfortunately, the patient's condition deteriorated during the journey and he died. The ECG performed at GTB Hospital showed no signs of life,” the doctor said.

When the body was brought back to Hedgewar Hospital, the doctor on duty was allegedly verbally and physically attacked by the patient's relatives, which left her traumatised, the junior doctor said.

Relatives of the patient allegedly beat the doctor with shoes and abused her, he added.

According to the assistant doctor, the hospital management has not yet taken any action in this regard.
