18-year-old wanted in fatal shooting in southeast Portland turns himself in; victim identified

PORTLAND, Oregon (KPTV) – A suspect wanted in connection with a fatal shooting in the Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhood turned himself in to police Thursday, according to the Portland Police Bureau.

The shooting occurred shortly after 8:30 a.m. Tuesday in the 5900 block of Southeast 136th Avenue. When officers arrived at the scene, they found a woman, identified as 38-year-old LaToya M. Hill, suffering from gunshot wounds.

Hill was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. Later Tuesday afternoon, police announced that she had died at the hospital.

After the shooting, the East Metro SWAT team searched the neighborhood for the shooting suspect but was unable to locate him.

A shooting led to a major police operation in the Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhood on Tuesday morning.

The suspect, 18-year-old Kamari Nathaniel Gates, turned himself in at the FBI's Northern Precinct, according to police. Gates was arrested and booked into the Multnomah County Jail. He is charged with second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon.

The investigation is ongoing and further details have not yet been released.
