Authorities find man in Lee County after police officer was shot

LEE COUNTY, SC (WIS) – A man wanted by authorities in connection with the shooting of a Chesterfield County police officer is now dead following an officer-involved shooting.

According to authorities, police officers located 27-year-old Alston Modlin around 10 a.m. Friday in Lee County on Ashland Stokes Bridge Road.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) said authorities found Modlin and a shootout ensued.

The Lee County Coroner's Office has confirmed the person's death; the death investigation is ongoing.

Modlin was wanted in connection with the shooting of a McBee Police Department officer. The shooting occurred around 11 p.m. Thursday near McBee High School.

A report from WIS News 10's sister station, WBTV, said the officer was being treated at the hospital, but the extent of his injuries was unclear.

The investigation is still active.

In a statement, SLED said they, along with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the Lee County Sheriff's Office, have asked the Horry County Police Department to investigate the officer-involved shooting.

According to officials, this shooting is the 33rd police-involved shooting in the Palmetto State this year.
