Trump in the election campaign – Domestic enemy territory

Trump in the election campaign – Domestic enemy territory

Trump will speak just twenty miles outside of New York City, the city where he was born and made his career as a real estate mogul and TV star. In Uniondale on Long Island stands the Veterans Memorial Coliseum, a state-of-the-art event hall that is normally home to the stars of pop music, basketball and ice hockey. You have to wait in line for two and a half hours to finally get inside. Plenty of time to watch the hustle and bustle around you. Dozens of memorabilia vendors sell hats, T-shirts, buttons. Pickup trucks drive up and down the sidelines, some adorned with Trump or Make America Great Again flags, each as big as at least four ping pong tables. Not only are the flags gigantic, but so are the vehicles; you can guess that none of them consumes less than 25 liters, and you can see that the drivers are proud of it.

Three quarters of those in line are wearing printed T-shirts, the most common of which is the iconic photo of Trump after the assassination attempt in July, where he is bleeding from his ear, raising his fist and the US flag is fluttering in the background. Some of the T-shirts are ironic, such as a smiling Trump holding a cat in his left arm and a dog in his right arm, with the words “Make Pets Safe Again” written underneath. There is also a shirt with LGBT printed on it. What? Gays, lesbians and the like here? But in small print underneath it says what the letters are supposed to stand for: L for Liberty, G for Guns, B for Beer and T? For Trump, of course.
