A 41-year-old woman died after being struck by a Houston police patrol car late Thursday.

Officers from the North Patrol Division transported an arrestee to the jail processing center near the 5300 block of Antoine Drive around 10 p.m. Thursday.

As they were traveling north, police say the patrol car struck a woman who was walking on the roadway rather than in a crosswalk. The woman had just gotten off a bus with her three children – an 18-year-old man and two underage girls.

Officers stopped to help the woman. Paramedics took her to Ben Taub General Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. The children were not injured in the accident.

A preliminary investigation by the authority found that speeding did not play a role in the accident and that the woman had failed to yield the right of way to another vehicle.

The woman's identity is pending confirmation by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

The Internal Affairs Department is investigating the case.
