Police officer arrested for sexually harassing a teacher in Uttar Pradesh

Pratapgarh (UP): A sub-inspector was arrested here on Friday after a teacher accused him of sexual harassment, officials said on Friday.

The accused police officer, who was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident, has been suspended and an internal departmental investigation has been launched against him, a senior officer said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Sanjay Rai said the 30-year-old teacher lives with her daughter in Lalganj and works in a private school.

“On the day of the incident, she was travelling to Lalganj by tempo when Sub-Inspector Ram Keval, who was also in the vehicle and was drunk, started harassing her. When she protested, he allegedly threatened her,” Rai said.

Following the complaint at Lalganj police station, an FIR was lodged against Ram Keval and he was taken into custody on Friday. The officer was posted at Nawabganj police station, the additional SP said.

Rai said a medical examination was conducted on Ram Keval which confirmed the presence of alcohol in his body, following which Superintendent of Police Anil Kumar suspended the accused officer and ordered a departmental inquiry into the case.
