(CBS-DETROIT) – What began as an argument between two neighbors early in the morning escalated into gunfire and the shooter barricaded himself for hours, police said.

At around 4:30 a.m. Friday morning, police received a report that someone had been shot in the Dover Hill neighborhood of Walled Lake. The shooter was the victim's neighbor, according to police.

“When they arrived, they found a man approximately 45 years old with a gunshot wound,” said Walled Lake Police Chief Paul Shakinas.

Shakinas said the two men had previously feuded, which resulted in a fight. The suspect, whose name was not released, then locked himself in his house, leading to an hours-long standoff with authorities.

Walled Lake Police were assisted by the Oakland County SWAT team and Novi Police in removing the suspect from his home.

“We were concerned because a friend and a three-year-old boy, the suspect’s son, were in the house,” Shakinas said.

The girlfriend and son were able to escape unharmed. The suspect turned himself in, was arrested and is now awaiting charges.

“This kind of thing can happen anywhere,” Shakinas said. “It doesn't matter if it's a small town or a big city. We think it went as well as it could have.”

The victim was taken to a local hospital and is expected to be released on Friday.

Authorities are still trying to determine what led to the argument this morning.
