PKS wants to sanction elected council member accused of child abuse

JakartaThe Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) has announced that it will impose internal sanctions against its member HA, who is named as a suspect in a child abuse case in Singkawang, West Kalimantan.

HA was recently elected as a member of the Singkawang Regional Council (DPRD). He attended the swearing-in ceremony of Singkawang City Council members for the 2024-2029 term at the Singkawang Mayor's Office on Tuesday.

HA was named as a suspect in an alleged molestation case on a 13-year-old child on August 26. Singkawang police summoned HA twice, but he failed to appear as he was ill. According to a letter from a hospital in Pontianak City, HA was advised to take complete rest until September 27.

“We have an internal team that will later decide on the internal sanctions,” acting PKS chairman Ahmad “Aher” Heryawan told reporters in Jakarta on Friday.

Aher added that his party would respect the legal system.

The chairman of the Election Supervision Body (Bawaslu), Rahmat Bagja, had previously stated that HA's inauguration could be postponed if he was proven guilty of the crime.

“Is there a court decision? If HA's guilt is proven, he can no longer be a member of the Singkawang Council,” Rahmat said in Jakarta on Thursday.
