Prince Andrew's ex: Few people know about the drama surrounding Fergie's mother

Sarah Ferguson, ex-wife of Prince Andrew, remembers her mother, who died 26 years ago, on Instagram. The relationship with her was not always easy.

“Every day I thank the universe for allowing me to be your mother. You have always been the blood in my veins. When you were still tiny worms, you made my life complete.” These moving lines, which Sarah “Fergie” Ferguson (64) publicly addressed to her two daughters Princess Beatrice (36) and Princess Eugenie (34) in 2021, give an idea of what a full-blooded mother the former wife of Prince Andrew (64) is.

Fergie about her mother: “Like all of us, she made mistakes, but …”

Sarah herself must not have always had an ordinary relationship with her own mother. She also lets this be seen in a post from Thursday (September 19), which she published in honor of the 26th anniversary of the death of her mother Susan. Alongside a series of pictures from times gone by, she writes: “My much loved mother Susie died 26 years ago today. She was far too young to be taken from us and I often think that at just 61, she was younger than I was when she died in a horrific accident. I think constantly of her zest for life and her radiant spirit. How we all made mistakes, but she taught me to appreciate each day and to always try to treat people with kindness. I miss her very much.”

Sarah Ferguson's mother left the family for Argentine polo player

Fergie's mother left the family because she had fallen in love with the Argentinian polo player Héctor Barrantes (†51). Sarah was 13 at the time, her sister Jane Louisa 15 years old. Susan's departure caused a lot of gossip in Britain's high society. After all, Fergie's parents came from the finest circles. Her father, Major Ronald Ivor Ferguson (†71), held a high rank in the military and was manager of the polo team of King Charles III (75) when he was still a prince. Mother Susan (née Wright, previously Ferguson, then Barrantes) came from a wealthy industrial family.

Short years of harmony and happiness

In Argentina, Fergie's mother and the new man at her side lived on a polo ranch in the Buenos Aires province. There they bred ponies and cattle. In 1975, a year after the official divorce from the father of her children, Susan finally married her sportsman. Photos from the following years show a happy and liberated Susan. It was also on the ranch that Susan developed her passion for producing documentaries.

Susan had an accident on the way to the ranch

In 1990, Susan's harmonious life in Argentina came to an end. Her beloved second husband died of cancer. As a widow, it became difficult for the British woman to finance the large property and all the animals on it. She sold half of the ranch to an Australian media mogul and moved into an apartment in Buenos Aires. There was also a change in her career: they founded a TV production company specializing in horses. She also wrote a book called “Polo,” for which her good friend, at the time still Prince Charles, wrote a foreword.

In 1998, when Susan was on her way from her city apartment to the ranch, she collided with a catering truck on a country road. While the driver of the other car only broke her ankle, Susan, who was not wearing a seatbelt, died in the accident at the age of 61. Only a year earlier, Princess Diana (†36) had died as a result of a car accident. Susan attended her funeral with her daughter Fergie. Susan herself was not buried in her original home of Great Britain, but next to her second husband in Argentina.

Fergie wrote an emotional letter 17 years after her mother's accidental death

In Lisa Erspamer's book “A Letter to my Mom” in 2015, Fergie opened her heart and wrote to her dead mother: “It's been 17 years since you last drove away. Not a day goes by that I don't wish I could just pick up the phone and tell you what I'm doing.

It continues: “I look back now and thank you, forgive you, and love you more and more. You gave me the strength to look at life differently. I am convinced that I would never have become such a strong person if I had not had to deal with the feeling of abandonment.

In a podcast, Fergie once said: “I think my mother-in-law [Queen Elizabeth II., †96, Anmerkung der Redaktion] To be honest, she was more of a mother to me than my mother.
