Rahul Dravid conveyed his best wishes to Gautam Gambhir, just hours after the former left-hander made his Test debut as the head coach of the Indian cricket team.

Gambhir took over the role after Dravid decided not to extend his tenure following India's victory in the T20 World Cup. The former opener began his coaching stint in Sri Lanka, where India won 3-0 in the T20Is but trailed 0-2 in the ODI series.

On Thursday, Gambhir began his journey as a Test coach as India began their home season against Bangladesh. Dravid expressed his confidence in Gambhir's abilities as a coach, citing his extensive experience as a player and IPL coach.

“He (Gambhir) has a lot of experience, he has played a lot as a player too, he has obviously trained quite a lot. I am sure he will be great,” said Dravid, who coached India to the T20 World Cup title in June.

“In every situation, everyone brings their own experience and knowledge. I am sure the team will benefit from everything that Gautam brings with his team,” he added.

During Dravid's time as coach, the Indian team reached the finals of the ODI World Cup and the World Test Championship. Under Gambhir's leadership, India will play 10 Test matches over the next four months, including two against Bangladesh and three against New Zealand at home, before heading to Australia for a five-match series.

Before Gambhir officially took over as head coach, Dravid sent an audio message through the BCCI wishing him luck and saying, “I know the dedication and passion you have for Indian cricket and I am sure you will bring all these qualities to this new job.”

Dravid also told Gambhir that while expectations would be high and attention intense, he could count on the unwavering support of his players, support staff, football legends and passionate fans, especially during difficult times.

“From one Indian cricket coach to another, one last thing. In the most heated moments, exhale, step back and smile even if it is difficult. Whatever else happens, it will shock people. I wish you all the best Gautam and I am sure you will lead the Indian team to even greater heights,” Dravid concluded.
