Dorchester man arrested for 1988 murder of Karen Taylor

A Dorchester man was arrested Thursday for the fatal stabbing attack of a 25-year-old mother who was found lying facedown in a pool of blood in her Roxbury apartment 36 years ago, the Suffolk District Attorney's Office said.

James Holloman, 65, is scheduled to be arraigned on first-degree murder charges in Suffolk Superior Court on Friday, prosecutors said in a statement.

Holloman's DNA, recovered by Boston police investigators last year, matched the profile of an unidentified man obtained from Karen Taylor's fingernail swabs after her murder in 1988, the statement said.

The statement did not describe Holloman's relationship with Taylor, but a prosecutor's office spokesman said in an email that Holloman was no stranger to Taylor.

Prosecutors said more details would be released at Holloman's arraignment.

Taylor's three-year-old daughter was with Taylor's body when it was discovered late in the afternoon of May 27, 1988. Taylor had been stabbed 15 times, prosecutors said.

When Taylor's mother called the apartment, her granddaughter answered the phone. The girl told her grandmother that her mother was sleeping and she could not wake her, the statement said.

Taylor's mother went to the apartment at 37 Williams Street. When she couldn't get into the building, she climbed through the window of her daughter's first-floor apartment, prosecutors said.

Taylor's mother found her daughter lying face down in a pool of blood in the apartment, the statement said.

Taylor was stabbed multiple times in the chest, head and neck, prosecutors said.

A Suffolk Superior Court grand jury indicted Holloman on first-degree murder charges Thursday, and Holloman was arrested by Boston Police Detectives that afternoon.

“This is an example of the outstanding investigative work of detectives and prosecutors using modern forensic science, but most importantly, it is an opportunity for Karen Taylor's family to see someone answer for her death after so many years of unanswered questions,” Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden said in the statement.
