A traffic accident in the holiday resort of Lido di Camaiore resulted in the death of two German schoolgirls from North Rhine-Westphalia. The police are investigating the circumstances of the accident.

Update from September 19, 4:27 p.m.: What “warlike conditions” looked like at the scene of an accident in a seaside resort in Tuscany, in which two German schoolgirls were killed. On Wednesday evening, Italian media reported that a 44-year-old driver lost control of her car and crashed into a crowd.

As the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung (WAZ) writes, the accident happened right in front of a hotel and near a supermarket. The two young women from Duisburg were supposed to be going shopping when the Mercedes veered off the road on Via Italica at around 7 p.m. The vehicle had to be driven at high speed into the pedestrians. Witnesses told the news channel Rai that the car was traveling “like a bullet.” Others reported a “terrible bang” on impact.

Seven people were injured in the accident, including another German schoolgirl and the driver herself. They are being investigated for homicide. The background and cause of the accident are now to be fully clarified.

The comprehensive school, which has almost 1,300 students, combines the secondary school, middle school and high school courses.

Witnesses report on Accident – Driver cannot remember

Update from September 19, 12pm: Two people were killed and seven others injured in a tragic traffic accident in Lido di Camaiore on Wednesday (September 18). Another student from the Q2 final year of the Duisburg-Mitte comprehensive school is among the injured. The police reports to the dpa initially did not provide any information on the health of the injured people from Germany. Another person was still in critical condition on Thursday morning.

The driver of the accident has been placed under house arrest. She is being investigated for manslaughter. She told the police that she could not remember the course of events of the accident, reports the Corriere Fiorentino. “I don't remember anything that happened.”

Italy: Two German holidaymakers die in car accident in Tuscany

First report from September 19, 6.17 a.m.: Lido di Camaiore – The idyll of the Tuscan coast was suddenly disrupted on Wednesday evening (September 18) by a tragic traffic accident in which two young German women lost their lives. The two teenagers, born in 2005 and 2006, noticed each other on a school trip in the region and were hit by a car that, for reasons that are still unclear, raced into a group of pedestrians.

The accident occurred around 7 p.m. when a 44-year-old woman ran two red lights and lost control of her car. The driver, who according to the police is from Brazil, first hit the two German schoolgirls and then other pedestrians. The vehicle only came to a stop after it had crashed into several parked cars.

Driver under the influence of drugs or alcohol? Italian police investigate

The police arrested the driver and conducted toxicological tests to determine whether she was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. According to information from the daily newspaper The National The hypothesis that is currently considered the most likely is that the driver could have been surprised by a sudden feeling of unwellness.
