Severe storms flood Italy: Firefighter's death drama

The weather situation in Europe is explosive. In Italy, drivers have got into trouble. An attempt to rescue them ended tragically.

Munich – Many parts of Europe are currently dominated by the consequences of severe storms. Italy was also not spared from heavy rain and flooding.

A firefighter lost his life on Tuesday (September 17) during a rescue operation in the Apulia region. According to authorities, the 59-year-old's SUV was swept away by masses of water, causing the man to drown. The tragic incident occurred near the municipality of San Severo.

He and his colleagues were on their way back from another mission in the region. They came across the occupants of a broken-down vehicle who were surprised by the masses of water. This is also reported by the Italian newspaper The Mezzogiorno NewspaperIn Austria, a driver was also trapped in the water masses. However, the 84-year-old was very lucky.

The firefighter's body was found about 700 meters from the scene of the accident in a canal along a state road between the municipalities of San Severo and Apricena. The man, who authorities said had celebrated his 60th birthday in a month, was about to retire.

Severe storms are currently prevalent in many parts of Europe. Large parts of Italy are also affected. The regions of Rome and Tuscany are currently suffering particularly badly, but the north of the country and the southeast in the Apulia region have not been spared from flooding either. Previously, the regions of Piedmont and Lombardy were particularly affected. Many holidaymakers in Italy are also confronted with the extent of the damage.

Meteorologists expect further heavy rainfall in Italy

According to weather service forecasts, there will be further heavy rain in large parts of Italy until Friday. Meteorologist Lorenzo Tedici said on Wednesday: “We will experience at least 48 hours of storms that are entirely in keeping with autumn. This year, the torrential rains have come a little too early.”

The flood situation also remains tense in Saxony, the Czech Republic and Poland. Although the water level is slowly falling in many parts of Austria, some places are still completely cut off from the outside world. On Tuesday, another person was found dead – the fifth fatality due to the current storm in Austria.

At times, train traffic between Munich and Vienna also suffered from the weather. In Bavaria, a 19-year-old was also swept away by the floods. (bk/dpa)
