Police say non-speaking child runs away from home after babysitter becomes drunk and unconscious

HINESVILLE, Ga. (WTOC/Gray News) – A babysitter in Georgia faces charges for being drunk and allowing a young child who could not yet speak to run away from home, police said.

According to Hinesville police, a boy who appeared to be four or five years old and unable to speak was found wandering on the street on Tuesday.

While attempting to reunite the child with his family, investigators found that the child's caregiver was “extremely intoxicated and unconscious,” police said.

This allowed the boy to leave home unsupervised.

Police said the caregiver was not a family member, but did not publicly release the person's name.

Police said the babysitter was arrested and faces charges.

The child was safely reunited with his family.
