Former high school sports star charged with assaulting two Bethlehem police officers with stun gun

A former Bethlehem Catholic High School football standout and one-time Express-Times basketball player of the year faces assault charges after allegedly attacking two Bethlehem police officers and using a department stun gun on them.

Kyle Justin Newell, 27, whose address is in the 500 block of Broadway and the 700 block of Cherokee Street in the city, is charged with two counts of aggravated assault; two counts of aggravated disarming a police officer without lawful authority; one misdemeanor count of possession of a crime weapon; four counts of simple assault and one misdemeanor count of resisting justice.

Charges were filed against Newell on Thursday. He is currently being held in Northampton County and is scheduled to be arraigned late Thursday afternoon before District Judge Daniel J. Finello Jr. Court records do not yet indicate Newell's attorney. Havertown-based attorney Richard Sherwood Roberts Jr., who has represented Newell in the past, could not immediately be reached for comment. It is unclear whether Roberts is representing Newell in this new case.
