Nelson Pires appears in court. (WLNE)

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The father of a 7-year-old girl shot and killed in Providence on Aug. 29 attempted to run over the suspected shooters with his car before the shooting, authorities said.

Nelson Pires was held without bail in Newport County on an alleged probation violation and faces two charges of child endangerment and driving without a license.

According to authorities, Pires had a verbal exchange with the two suspected shooters, Ahmari Cabrera and Shaheem Nathaniel, immediately before the shooting.

After the exchange, Cabrera and Nathaniel drove away in separate vehicles, followed by Pires.

Pires is then said to have crashed into her car twice upon arriving at a party.

One of the suspected shooters then left his vehicle, whereupon Pires allegedly attempted to run him over with his car while his daughter, seven-year-old Ny'eil Pires, and a young son were sitting in the back seat.

According to authorities, Pires was backing up his vehicle at that point and was shot at by the two suspects.

A shot hit his daughter and led to her death on September 2nd.

Cabrera and Nathaniel are both charged with murder.
