Fatal car accident in Tuscany: Two schoolgirls were run over during a school trip.

In the municipality of Lido di Camaiore, on the Mediterranean coast, a tragic accident occurred in which two schoolgirls (18 and 19 years old) lost their lives.

Hit by car

The two teenagers, who come from North Rhine-Westphalia and were on a school trip, were hit by a car that drove into a group of pedestrians. The exact causes of the accident and the background are still unclear, according to local authorities. So far, the Italian police have not released any further information about the identity of the victim.

Lost control

According to reports, the driver of the car, a 44-year-old woman, lost control of her vehicle on Wednesday evening around 7 p.m. She was arrested, Mayor Marcello Pierucci announced. It is being investigated whether she was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Driver from Brazil

The Italian news agency Ansa reported that the driver was from Brazil and was driving a Mercedes. A total of seven people were injured, including the driver. All of the injured were taken to hospital. According to the mayor, the vehicle raced through two red lights in the city center at high speed, first hitting the two German schoolgirls and then injuring other pedestrians. The car finally came to a stop after ramming several parked vehicles near a hotel.
