Volkswagen is reportedly planning to close a plant in China

WOLFSBURG (dpa-AFX) – Volkswagen AG and its Chinese joint venture partner SAIC Motor are reportedly planning to close a plant in China.

The joint venture is preparing to close a factory in Nanjing as early as next year, Reuters reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

The site, where the VW Passat and Skoda models are manufactured, has an annual capacity of up to 360,000 vehicles.

The automaker may also close additional plants in response to falling demand for vehicles with combustion engines.

The automaker will gradually shift production of its Passat family models from its Nanjing plant to a nearby factory in the same eastern province of Jiangsu.

Some workers at the Nanjing plant would be instructed to transfer to SAIC-VW's Yizheng plant, which currently produces the Lavida sedans, a best-seller for the brand, the person said.
